Southern Pacific Archaeological Research (SPAR) is a research and consulting unit within the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Otago. SPAR is one of New Zealand’s leading archaeological and heritage consultancies. We work throughout New Zealand and have several projects in the South Pacific.

SPAR clients can be found in the energy, mining, forestry, farming, environmental and land-development sectors, as well as in local and central government. We also have considerable experience working with iwi, both as clients and as project partners.

As part of the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, SPAR has access to the world class facilities and equipment of the University of Otago Archaeology Laboratories (OAL). Our staff work in the consulting field, but also carry out academic research in New Zealand and Pacific archaeology.
